Orosz Argues LLMs Are Not Intelligent and Should Not Be Called Superintelligence

AISummary

Gergely Orosz argues that LLMs, as probability distributions that generate the next token, do not meet common understanding of intelligence, so even the term "artificial intelligence" is a stretch. He says hallucination is a feature of this design rather than a bug, and criticizes renaming LLMs as "superintelligence." Simon Willison's reply calls the "Super Intelligence" label stupid.

@GergelyOrosz

To me, even “artificial intelligence” was a stretch given LLMs are probability distributions and do not meet our common understanding of “intelligence.” Hallucination is a feature not a bug; generating the next token and the next also.

Renaming LLMs to “superintelligence” 😱

This "Super Intelligence" thing is just so, so, so stupid I can't even
